CREDITON WOMEN'S ENVIRONMENTAL NETWORK

WEN – who are we & what do we do?

Crediton Women’s Environmental Network welcomes everyone to join together for a greener, healthier future. We are part of a national network of groups campaigning for environmental justice through feminist principles. We take conscious actions to consume less (we had a wonderful clothes swapping evening in January), to use resources more effectively (we organised a car boot sale last year), to raise awareness at local level about climate change (our first event was a Storm in a Teacup climate change themed coffee morning), and to engage women and men in community-based projects such as allotments and orchards (we have our own WEN allotment and are working with the Tree Group to identify land suitable for developing a community orchard in Crediton).

What’s Happening in 2012?

We will continue our informal get togethers celebrating the seasons, learning new skills, sharing ideas, stories and top tips for living a leaner, greener lifestyle. We will also be re-launching our popular allotment days.

Keep checking this space as more information comes on line
and we update the details of all the latest events. If you want to get involved (and we’d LOVE you to!) then contact our Chair,
Kate Povey (Kate@LittleEmlett.co.uk – or our Vice Chair and Allotment Coordinator, Anita Munson (a.clarinet@hotmail.co.uk).

WEN News

The Crediton Women's Environmental Network (WEN) is back! Please come and join us at our following events. If you need any more information about us do please get  in touch. Most direct is by phone (Kate – 01363 860208) but can email too ( kate@littleemlett.co.uk )

1. The New Home Front Report commissioned by Green MP Caroline Lucas and launched last month, draws parallels between where we are now and the late 1930s. Today, many groups across the UK, including WEN are leading the way to a new Home Front. 2. December 2011 News

We have decorated the WEN tree at the Crediton Christmas Tree Festival – I hope many of you came to look at all the wonderfully decorated trees from so many organisations and groups in the area. Our theme was ‘re-use and recycle' – something we are hoping to carry forward throughout the festive season. Cutting back on the amount of rubbish which accumulates over December doesn't have to be difficult. Scrunched up wrapping paper is useful for lighting stoves, left over veg from Christmas dinner can be souped or bubble and squeaked, and try and choose children's presents that aren't encased and wrapped in layers of plastic.

Wednesday 21 December - We are celebrating Winter Solstice at Anita's house (6, Queen Elizabeths Drive). All women and children welcome. Starts at 7pm. Please bring snacks and drinks. We will also have a Basket of Abundance again. This means everyone brings a gift (which can be a jar of something homemade, some local fresh eggs, a winter posy, a book that you enjoyed and want to pass on ... ...) and then at some point in the evening everyone chooses something out of the basket.

Saturday 14 January 2012 – WEN clothes swap, now in its third year will be held at Charlotte's, in Shobrooke (8, School Close) from 7pm. Bring along unwanted clothes, (and books, dvds, cds) and get a chance to update your wardrobe for nothing! Please bring snacks and drinks. What we've done before is arrive quite promptly, set out clothes and browse through them all, selecting a few items, then have a break with snacks and then return for one last look for those hidden gems lurking under the piles of clothes!

Saturday 25 February 2012– Sustainable Crediton's 5th Birthday Party – WEN are providing the children's corner, complete with entertainment – more details in the next newsletter. Please come.

If you've never made it to a WEN meeting before then please do come to one of these events. We are a small, friendly group of women – quite a few with small children, many of us juggling a number of jobs and commitments – and it would be nice to see some new faces.

For any RSVPs, or questions please contact me, Kate Povey, 01363 860208, kate@littleemlett.co.uk .

3. Growing Together – Former WEN HQ Local Food Project Coordinator is now working in Norfolk and still involved in growing food. Please follow the link to the Growing Together film showcasing her project. It's 14 brilliant minutes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eNwkpuoEq-8
