LAUNCH OF PLASTIC BAG FREE CREDITON SATURDAY NOVEMBER 1ST 12.15PM MARKET SQUARE AND HIGH STREET

Yes the Plastic Bag Group with help from a committed group of town traders have done it. We have announced the date for the launch of Plastic Bag Free Crediton.

The great news is that the Farmers Market have agreed to join the scheme so we will be having a big launch in the Market Square during the Farmers Market on Nov 1st. Come and join the celebrations. We are planning music, cake, the signing of a plastic bag free charter by the Mayor and of course the give away of 1,000 environmentally friendly Crediton branded jute shopping bags. There is a lot of press interest in the event so expect to see reporters and maybe even the TV!!

More details of plans next month as they become finalised.

We will need help on the day so if you can spare a couple of hours to give away bags in the High St please get in touch with me. Your help would be appreciated.

Meantime there are still a few shops in town to be won over - we are working on it. But you can play a part too by making a point of saying how great you think the scheme is every time you shop anywhere in Crediton and of course refusing disposable bags particularly in the take aways.

Our order for over 1700 jute bags which we plan to give away/ sell at our launch of Plastic Bag Free Crediton on the 1st November have now arrived. They are branded The Crediton Bag and will not only give shoppers an alternative to plastic carriers but we hope will also build pride in the town too.

July 2008

During July we are approaching ALL the retail premises in Crediton to ask them to join the Plastic Bag Free Crediton scheme.

So we are at a crucial juncture and NEED YOUR HELP.

Please, every time you go into ANY shop in Crediton, make it known that you support the plastic bag free scheme. Some of the shops are very much on board now but others still need persuading and the more of you who tell them you would like to see them join the scheme the more confidence they will have in coming on board. Part of the scheme is to charge 10p for any plastic bag alternative that is given out after our launch date (to dissuade people from taking uneccessary bags) and some traders are a bit wary of this, so if you tell them you think it is a good idea you will build their confidence. Thank you

Other Plastic Bag News

You may have heard in the news recently that Gordon Brown has added potential legislation about plastic bags to the Climate Change Bill. This is great news and we really believe that the war on plastic carriers is fast being won!

Over 60 shops in Crediton have now either stopped using plastic carriers or agreed to stop using them when we go Plastic Bag Free in the Autumn and many more are in the pipeline.

Even the supermarkets are being co-operative and we will be having displays at Somerfields this month and encouraging shoppers to use Bags For Life or eco friendly bags rather than single use carriers. Thanks to Mid Devon Council we also have 500 re-usable bags to give away to shoppers who are showing committment to changing their habits.
