Report on Lobbying of our MP, Angela Browning

18 June 2008

Sent in by Charles Mossman (it took Charles and Laura 9 months of trying to get this slot with Ms Browning at her clinic at the Boniface Center):

"Laura Conyngham and I met with our MP Angela Browning on the 7th June, to lobby her regarding the Climate Change Bill currently being discussed in parliament. We urged her to vote in favour of three key improvements to the Bill, namely to increase the cuts in CO2 emissions from 60% to 80% by 2050, to include international aviation and shipping emissions in the calculations and to have annual monitoring of the targets.

Angela Browning was supportive of these amendments and she indicated so were the Conservative Party generally. In terms of the 80 % cut in emissions, the Conservatives want the % cut to be set and monitored by an independant scientific commission, with the prime minister giving an annual report on progress. They want the % cut to be flexible to ensure that the maximum increase in global temperatures is limited to 2 degrees centigrade.

However in a further general discussion about the activities of CCA and Transition Towns, it became apparent that Angela Browning supports the building of more nuclear power stations to provide electricity."
