Wildlife wardens coming to Mid Devon, and job opportunity

8 April 2022

The Social Enterprise New Prosperity Devon (NPD) has been awarded a grant of £9,700 from the National Lottery for setting up a Mid Devon Wildlife Warden Scheme for volunteers in each parish to undertake public education and conservation work in support of wildlife and biodiversity. The project will start with a pilot programme training a limited number of volunteers in three parishes, including Cheriton Bishop, where the Parish Council has helped initiate the scheme. We're also grateful to our County Councillor Frank Letch who has supported the pilot from the start and enabled us with £1,400 for a website and expenses to support the scheme.

The project will now be recruiting a Coordinator to establish the scheme and train and support the Wildlife Wardens. See below for the job advert: closing date 14 April.

The Mid Devon project will be managed by a steering group with representatives of Sustainable Crediton, Sustainable Tiverton, Mid Devon Wildlife and NPD. There is already a very successful scheme running in Teignbridge.

Job Opportunity: Project Coordinator: Mid-Devon Wildlife Warden Scheme

We are looking for a Project Coordinator to 'kickstart' the establishment of a Mid-Devon Wildlife Warden Scheme. The intention is to create a 'grass roots', parish-based group of wildlife wardens. This is likely to comprise two to four wardens in each parish who are local volunteers keen to protect and enhance the natural environment.

The applicant should have a basic knowledge of practical ecology and be good at working with people of all ages and backgrounds. The role will also require good administrative and organisational skills including record-keeping and managing the volunteer parish wardens. A key aspect of the role will be to lead the establishment and development of the scheme with support from members of the project steering group.

We have secured funding for one year enabling a Project Coordinator to work one day per week (flexible) on a self-employed basis. Working from home, the Project Coordinator will be required to travel on occasion to parishes within the Mid-Devon district. It is envisaged that this will involve assisting and coordinating local Wildlife Wardens with practical wildlife management and development.

The budget for this role is £6,000 for one day per week (pro rata £30,000 per annum).
