Quality pork from field to freezer

27 October 2017

Crediton Pig Club has, for two years now, brought together smallholders and families who are keen to rear small numbers of traditional breed pigs in a good way. We have grown with the support of Sustainable Crediton, and aim to encourage local producers. Last January, we invited people to commit to pig 'shares' and then sourced Oxford Sandy and Black weaners to meet this demand. The weaners were cared for locally till six months old, and then the fresh pork produce, including joints, chops and sausages, was directly distributed to pig sharers to store in their freezers. Reports back from our members about the quality of the pork have been highly positive. Our members have produced a recipe booklet using every part of the pig, available now from Crediton Bookshop. We are keen to hear of any smallholders who would be interested in rearing pigs for the Club in 2018. All are invited to this open meeting on Monday 13th November 2017, 7-9 pm at the East Town Cafe, East St, Crediton EX17 3AZ (opposite Crediton Arts Centre ) for members and others interested. At the meeting we will review how things went in 2017, and plan ahead for 2018.
