Crediton declares a climate emergency: time to get active?

8 July 2019

The scale of the global environmental crisis is truly daunting. It can be hard to engage with what is happening, harder still to believe that as individuals we can make a difference. Yet people are doing so, all the time, either individually or collectively with others of like mind.

Thus, on 2nd July, Members of both Sustainable Crediton and Crediton Extinction Rebellion attended the Town Council Strategy Committee, at which the Council resolved to declare a Climate Emergency and for Crediton to become a carbon neutral town by 2030. This means the Town Council, Mid Devon District Council and the County Council are now on board to take action. Just a starting point of course. We shall monitor progress and hope to encourage the councils to keep to targets. Many more councils are taking action, let's believe this is a turning point.

We all need to keep up our efforts up to spread the word and encourage more people and businesses to reduce their carbon footprint. We need your help; there are so many projects we could undertake but without more volunteers they cannot happen. A commitment to 2-3 hours a month is all most projects need. We can help with skills and knowledge. We hear a lot that people don't want to take part in meetings, they are boring.  We'd say meetings are what you make of them. Sustainable Crediton encourages friendly, down to earth practical discussion about a project. Change is coming but you are needed to help make that happen.
