For years Sustainable Crediton and a local group called the
Boniface Trail group have been campaigning for a
cycle/pedestrian /multi use path (inc wheel chairs) from
Crediton to Exeter. Last year Devon County Council responded
to this campaign and carried out a consultation with two
possible options. One called the 'quiet' roads option which
would take the route away from the A377 and along back roads
going past the station at Newton St Cyres and coming out near
Bernaville nurseries. (ie the way many of us already go if
we want to avoid the main road)_. The other route would be
alongside the A377 but on a separate path. The majority of
those responding were in favour of the A377 route. We believe
that DCC officers tend to favour the 'quiet' roads route (not
always very quiet!) since it would not involve major expense
and could be done relatively quickly.
However, Sustainable Crediton favours the A377 route which
would be a proper cycle/pedestrian track like the one around
the Exe estuary.
At 10.30 am on December 10 th The DCC cabinet will be discussing
a paper on cycle routes in Devon (at County Hall). The
Boniface Trail is among the top 10 but no priority order has
been worked out. We need a systematic campaign to ensure our trail
is high on the list and also that they go for the A377 route,
not the 'quiet roads' route.
Here is a
link the Councillors on the Cabinet who will be making the
decision. It includes their email addresses and postal
addresses. Please write to them to give them your views.
Sustainable Crediton will also organise a lobby at County Hall on
that day so put it in your diaries if you can come along.
