Brainstorming of ideas for Waste Action during 2014



 

SUMMARY OF DECISIONS:

1. TO CONTINUE WITH REGULAR PLASTICS COLLECTIONS - frequency, timing, extra related things, volunteers and partners to be discussed

2. TO OPEN A POP-UP SHOP ON THE HIGH STREET - how long, timing, contents (Give & Take items, leaflets, recycling envelopes etc.) to be decided

3. TO CHOOSE (AN) OTHER ACTION(S) from ideas raised - e.g. a Give and Take at the Congregational Church, continue with Food Festival recycling, more education, liaison with other organisations, litter etc.     

 

REDUCE:

  • ·         FOOD WASTE REDUCTION
  • ·         RE-ENERGISE THE PLASTIC-BAG-FREE CREDITON CAMPAIGN
  • ·         DO 'THE  RUBBISH DIET' - find a compact area to try it out
  • ·         INVOLVE YOUNG PEOPLE MORE AND THEIR ORGANISATIONS - e.g. Scouts policy on community/recycling badge; reaching
  •                school pupils and their parents
  • ·         REDUCE WASTE IN THE FIRST PLACE - e.g. encourage shops and cafes to accept customers' own containers from mugs for
  •                takeaway drinks to storage containers for meat.
  • ·         PLASTIC BOTTLES TAX CAMPAIGN - see what other countries do & then campaign here
  • ·         EDUCATION - from talks to e.g. 'Senior Voice' for example to a one-off 'Green Day'; and encouraging people to buy   
  •                 less  packaging
  • ·         INVOLVE PUNCHBOWL STAFF AS APPROPRIATE
  • ·         ARTICLES IN THE CREDITON COURIER
  • ·         TAKE PLASTIC PACKAGING BACK TO SUPERMARKETS

REUSE:

  • ·         CLOTHES SWAP PLUS SPORTS ITEMS
  • ·         'GIVE AND TAKE' HOUSEHOLD GOODS EVENT - on the High Street
  • ·         POP-UP SHOP
  • ·         TOOL SHARING - e.g. apple press or create lending groups
  • ·         PROMOTE FREECYCLE AND FREEGLE
  • ·         AN ORGANISED 'FLYTIPPING' EVENT  IN ASSOCIATION WITH MDDC - in a street  for example
  • ·         DISCUSS RECYCLING OF PLANT POTS & TRAYS WITH GARDEN CENTRES

RECYCLE:

From the brainstorm:

  • ·         PLASTIC COLLECTIONS - look at frequency, hours, more volunteers, partners, new locations
  • ·         ANOTHER TERRACYCLE PROJECT - like the biscuit wrappers collection
  • ·         RECYCLING BY CHARITY ENVELOPE - e.g. mobile phones. Promote and keep a stock of them for giving out at events
  • ·         EDUCATION
  • ·         FUN DRAMATIC PLAYLET, WITH COSTUME
  • ·         RE-CHECK WITH PWS HQ WHAT EXTRA THEY WILL ACCEPT AS PLASTIC - e.g. some sorts of polystyrene?
  • ·         CARDBOARD RECYCLING FOR RURAL AREAS
  • ·         LITTER AWARENESS CAMPAIGN - including counting 1 high-value item e.g. plastic bottles (& costing that?)

  • ·         LIAISON WITH MDDC &DCC
  • ·         CAMPAIGNING TO GET MORE PLASTIC RECYCLED BY ORGANISATIONS
