The End of our Plastic Recycling

26 July 2015

Our plastic recycling events have finished!

The Waste Action Group held their last plastic recycling collection on Sat 25 July. Collections started in Crediton 5 years ago and since 2013 have been held every 2 months throughout the year. These collections have been supported by the public in their hundreds, as well as additional collections in Cheriton Fitzpaine and Sandford.

What started as a trial grew into regular collections at Peck & Strong's car park on the Industrial Estate. We did not make money from the events, but did it to promote recycling and to encourage more people to recycle plastic. We could not have held these events without the assistance of Peninsular Waste Savers (PWS) who transported the plastic to their depot and the volunteers who helped at the collections.

How much plastic was collected? Hard to visualise but 1034 builders bags full of plastic, weighing 14 tonnes, have been collected. The bags would fill Crediton's swimming pool nearly three times over or the Town Square to a depth of six feet!

Even though this is only a drop in the ocean compared to the amount being sent to landfill, at least it's a start. Now MDDC have started their doorstep collection, making it even easier for everyone in this area to recycle plastic and making our events redundant for which we are very pleased.
