Review of Waste Action Group meeting

1. Present: Esther Mann, Chris Freeman, Carolyn Scott, Frances Anson, Matt Hulland (manager Exeter Recycling Centre), Emma Mitchell,Ruth Leonard-Williams (Devon Projects worker), Cathy Watten

3. Matters Arising:  Nothing that needed to be talked about

 

4. We started by welcoming new attendees Matt Hulland, Frances Anson and Cathy Watten.

Matt then spoke a little about what he does ie Runs the Exeter Recycling Centre, writes a page called Crediton Journey to Zero Waste on the Facebook site 'Exeter Journey to Zero Waste', and spreads the word re recycling at several places in Crediton eg Haywards Primary School, Orchard Court Social Housing Complex and  The Greenhouse, wholefoods shop. He does litter picks, recycles reclaimed plastic from beaches and works with scouts/guides groups in Exeter. He is keen to support our Waste Action Group wherever he can and raise consciousness of recycling in Crediton.

 

5. Workshop: ' Making Plastic Pollution a Thing of the Past' put on by the Environment Agency at County Hall, Exeter today.  

Attended by Esther, Nancy, Carolyn and Chris. Some discussion of how we can take this forward.

Action   Esther, Nancy, Carolyn and Chris will meet separately on 1/10/18 at 2pm at Esther's house to discuss if/how we might take the findings from the workshop forward. Esther will forward the printouts from the workshop to tonight's group members when she receives them.

 

6. Crediton Xmas Event

WAG has been asked if we would like to do the recycling at this evening event.

Action
Esther will relay our decision that we will not be able to do the recycling as it is the same day as our Clothes Swap.

7. Repair Cafe

A repair cafe may happen again in Crediton hosted by the Methodist Church although no final details have yet been organised. They have asked if we could organise it.

Action
Ruth to advise them that we would be willing to help on the day but would not organise it.

 

8. Clothes Swap  

Chris has booked the main part of the Congregational Church and the Fishtank area  from 10-3pm on Saturday, November 24th at a cost of £15ph for this event.

We will serve cold food ie quiche, sandwiches and cake; also teas and coffees.

The event will run as follows:

10-10.30   Set up clothes rails

10.30-11.30    Receive clothes, give out tokens in return, hang up clothes. Refreshments available

12-2pm   Clothes swapping.

2-3pm   Clear up; bag up left over clothes.

Actions

Advertising Emma will design posters adapting the template used at previous clothes swap.

Matt will print out copies by the start of November.

Esther and Chris will distribute/put up posters around the town and elsewhere.

Emma will liaise with Michelle at Sustainable Crediton to get the event on Social Media. Ruth will help with this.

Volunteers    Esther will get the 15-20 volunteers needed.

Food   Cathy will source sandwiches/cakes with help from others. Chris will find out if Cathy can view the space at CCC on a Saturday soon.

Collecting rails, hangars, mirrors   Frances will organise to collect these with help from Matt if needed. Frances will contact Chris if her son is needed to help with collecting. Chris will find out if they can be dropped at CCC on the Friday before the event.

Ticket tokens    Esther will source these.

 

9. Date/time of next meeting  :October 9th, 7.30 at Chris's house.

 

 

Anyone interested in Reducing, Reusing or Recycling is welcome to come and join our small friendy group and see what we are planning. All ideas welcome!
