Sustainable Crediton Newsletter Issue 61

Photograph of Sarah Green

Welcome to the August Sustainable Crediton Newsletter. August is normally a quiet month for our activities as our groups tend to have a well earned rest. However this month that is not the case with the Food, Waste and Energy Groups all having meetings.

We are delighted to announce that following John Skrine's standing down as Chair, our new Chair is Sarah Green, whose photo appears to the right. Sarah joined the Core Group in December 2012 after being a supporter for about a year. She owns a business, Brighter Working Limited, which specialises in building websites and content management systems. Sarah has donated an incredible amount of time in the development of the Sustainable Crediton website. As well as being the talented designer of our website she is also our web master. Sarah will be attending a few of our upcoming Action Group meetings to meet our active supporters and hopes to find out how she can help further the aims of the groups and Sustainable Crediton in general.

A few words from Sarah: "Taking over from John is going to be a tough call - he brought a lot of experience to Sustainable Crediton and he'll be sorely missed. I'm sure you'll all join me in wishing him well in his new home. Looking forward, I'm very keen to make sure that we, as the Core Group, really support our local action groups (and maybe even spawn a few new ones!). So I'm actively seeking feedback from anyone who has ideas on where we should focus our efforts. If you have any suggestions or problems or questions please feel free to drop me a line at any time."

We are focussing on the Food Group this month. Their next meeting is at Wetherspoons at 7:30pm on the 26th August. New members are welcome, your help is needed to turn ideas into action, no experience needed. Come and see what new ideas they are starting to work on,  including foraging from the wild, herb growing plus making products from herbs and raising a pig for sharing. Work is starting on the 2016 Seed Share. Start saving your seeds ready for the Seed Share in the New Year. Read all about the Seed Share.

And finally, any supporter of Sustainable Crediton can place a post in our virtual Market-Place free of charge. Just contact me with details of what you have to offer or want.

Looking back and looking forward in the veg garden

The First Harvest It seems like only yesterday that it was May; the days were lengthening and the landscape was filled with uncountable variations of shades of green. Now many of those green shoots are ripe and brown. The thatching straw is stooked in the fields and the deep lanes are ful ...

See what has blossomed in the wild flower garden in July

The wild flower garden is a riot of colour this month. We now have a sneaking suspicion that a packet of North American wild flowers were mixed with our native ones! One cannot deny that cosmos and one or two others are definitely not British wild flowers. Despite that, the array of beauty i ...

Chagford Community Farm - the local food renaissance

On Sunday 19th July myself and The Little Goatherd visited the lovely area of Chagford on the eastern side of Dartmoor for a course on cheesemaking. Our hosts were Sylvan and Davon Friend at Chagfarm, (Chagford Community Farm CIC). Over the course of 4 or 5 hours we were able to turn goats' ...
